Everyone knows the importance of backlinks to their website. Without links, your site is like a shop without roads leading to it. The better the road, the more people you get. Same with the websites linking to you.
If you build a nice flashy site with awesome content, but only have a handful of links from a couple of directories, then it’s no surprise that you will probably be cleaning the floor instead of counting the dollars at the end of the day.
Some of the best ways to find links is through careful research. Using Google you can easily analyse your competitors backlinks – providing of course you know who your competitors are, which you should – it is a business after all.
Even if you don’t think those top ranking websites are your competitors, they essentially are – in the eyes of Google anyway. Find out where their links come from, and try and get links that they cannot get.
Sometimes the best links can come from friends, family, colleagues, partners and suppliers. Past customers or regulars also make good potential sources for links. These are the kinds of things that your competitors will find very hard if not impossible to get.
Ok, we have covered some of the good ones – but don’t loose sight of the regular options for link building. Directory Submissions still work, even today. And you will never have to pay for them – if is a pay only site, it is probably not worth the dollars you invest.
Blogs are also a common place where links can be found. Blog Comments must be ethical in nature and add to the post you are blogging on. Write more than one line, mention someone else’s comment or if known, mention the author by name. Even a “no follow” link from a blog may still be worth the effort – especially if the site has high traffic and many subscribers or followers.
With building backlinks, it is important to understand that slow and steady is the best policy. Don’t build too many all at once then nothing for ages after that. Be constant – like writing new content. Keep at it.
