The old saying that content is king may not be completely true
Yes, I know. People are going to flame me for this. But content is not the be all and end all of internet marketing or SEO.
I think it’s information. Look at your site, look at this one. Everything on the web is made up of information. Content is information. Links is information. Everything is information.
So, the question is: What Information is Important
Content
Yes. Content is important. It is what is on your website that matters. People are coming to your site to find information they are looking for. Information could be SEO tips like this one, or it could be the price of a pair of shoes or air line tickets. Anything.
Links
Links are a kind of information. Information supplied to other sites to link back to you with the proper anchor text. The Search Engines use these links to determine where you will be displayed for a given search term. Search Engines need information to display information. Period.
Analytics
Usually never shared, but data and information comes from Google Analytics or whatever else you are using to track your site’s visitors or performance. This is the kind of information that matters most to you and is not really interesting to your site’s visitors or customers. (Unless of course you are selling advertising space)
So, the next question is Why
Why is the information above important and to who? Why bother writing fresh content every week. Why bother creating links.
Well, the simple answer is because you have to. You want or have an online presence and the only way to keep it is to do the work that is required. And this means writing Content that is useful to your visitors or potential clients.
Links have to be made and built or … Well you need links. Links are for the search engines. If you don’t have links or have poor quality links, they won’t know what the hell your site is about and won’t give a dam either.
Analytics. Study the data every week, every month. Spend some time with it. If you did a massive email marketing campaign, track the progress study the data and see how it worked or didn’t. If it worked, and was a good return on investment, then do it again the next month. If not. Try something else, change it. Do it differently.
So is Content King? I think not. But it is definitely very very important to both your visitors and the search engines.
