So, you got yourself a new iPhone or Windows phone?
Do you know that over 50% of Smart Phone users in the US used their phones to browse the internet. More importantly the phones were used to find stores, do comparison shopping and even price checks. So, if you don’t measure up on a Mobile Scale, you are missing out on 1000′s of dollars worth of sales and potential clients.
Now, the biggest thing to mobile is how different it is to normal search engine optimisation for ‘big screen’ desktops and lap tops. And, in case you are wondering, the new tablets like the iPad and Androids My Tab are also considered to be ‘mobile’.
Differences between Mobile SEO and Desktop SEO
- Desktop SEO, all the regular things work.
- Mobile SEO, these are all important as well. Not much difference there. Title Tags, Descriptions and Content structure play an important part
- Local SEO, places pages, a maps listing is good for Desktop SEO, but not critically important
- my research shows that having a local listing on Google is imperative to Mobile SEO – many phones automatically detect your location so any search can turn up a local listing, or smaller sub listings (a 3 pack in the middle of regular results)
- Desktop Web Design can use a multitude of features like Flash, Video and Java script
- In mobile devices, much of the technology will be wasted. In addition to this the more server calls a page has to make, the longer its going to take for your page to load – potentially irritating the potential client who will go elsewhere
Remember, you may have ADSL or Broadband at home or in the office, but many smart phone users are on limited 3 g networks, they might be fast, but if they exceed their bandwidth, hefty bills will come about – another reason to have a purpose built website or page for Mobile visitors. The content they want to find, with a simple call to action link or better yet, a phone number so they can call you directly. Also, every page of your mobile site should have your physical address, email address and phone number.
Mobile is upon us, and will soon become a very important step in your marketing campaigns. As more and more people get online with phones and tablets, the more important it will be for businesses and especially retailers to have a custom built mobile site.
