anchort text back link building A to Z of SEO: Anchor TextFrom a suggestion by a friend I decided to embark on the A to Z of SEO. Writing an article, one each, for each leter of the Alphabet related to SEO.

So, to start this off, I am going to choose Anchor Text for “A”.

Anchor Text

Definition: In case you didnt know that is. Anchor Text is defined as the “text” that is linked. Example SEO above is the Anchor Text for the Link to this blog.

Most often Anchor Text is visible as above, but sometimes it is hidden or blended into the rest of the document or style of site. Personlly I prefer my links to be visible – different colour and underligned. Anchor Text should also be relevant. When building you back links weather by Blog Commenting, Directory Submissions or Articles, your Anchor Text should be or at the very least include the search terms you want to rank for or improve your rankings for.

If you are targeting Pet Health Blog, using Anchor Text such as Pet Health, Pet Blog, Dog / Cat variations is good. Having just a name probably wont get you much – on Blogs, one can use a name followed or prefixed by your search term or a variant of that.

Note I say variant – varying your anchor text is important. Having too many links for the same thing will eventually look spammy or at least suspicious by Google. Varying your links, including the site or business name, or even the URL does help.

Related to Anchor Text are Link Titles – these can be placed on links as well as images (some browsers will display the Title Text of an Image and some will display the Anchor Text – these are similar but different. A Computer or Browser not capable of displaying the Image will most often display the anchor text, not the title text.)

Stay tuned for B – Backlinks ….
